When to Change a Tyre
If your car doesn't handle or grip the road as well as usual in wet weather or it takes longer to stop when you apply the brakes, this could be a sign that your tyres need changing. Because your tyres wear down gradually it can be difficult to identify these changes so we recommend that you have your tyres checked regularly.
if your tyres don't meet legal requirements, you could face a fine of £2,500 per tyre and 3 penalty points on your licence - you dont want that !
Tyre tread and the Law
UK law requires car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre. Tyre manufacturers often mould tread bars at roughly 1.6mm to help identify this.
If you can see these bars your tyres then your tyre is about to become illegal and unsafe. We advise though for optimum safety, most manufacturers recommend that your tyres are changed at 3mm
While the manufacturer selects the correct tyre for your vehicle, the decision can be a compromise between performance, noise and comfort. Therefore upsizing your tyres can provide the following benefits:
- Improved response to change in direction
- Greater contact area with the ground for a smoother ride
- Improved traction
- Better control and handling
- Sleeker, more modern appearance
What type of tyres to choose?
The tyre you need will depend mainly on the kind of car you drive and the type of driving you do. Drive short distances around town on the school run / shops etc then economy and safety will be a primary concern when choosing a tyre. If you do a lot of motorway driving then low noise, comfort and fuel saving maybe be factors in helping you find the right tyre. Drivers with luxury cars and sports cars will be interested in high performance tyres, which offer precision handling, excellent traction and manoeuvrability at speed.
We can advise you on the right type of tyre for your driving requirements, and at a low tyre price that won't break your budget.
Wheel balancing ensures that the weight of the wheel and tyre is even around the axle, and is achieved by placing tiny offsetting weights at specific points around the wheel. If you notice uneven tyre wear or tyre 'wobble' at 40 - 50mph, it is likely that your wheels need re-balancing.
The right Tyre pressure can save you money
Having the correct tyre pressure is very important. It helps your tyres last longer, provides a smooth, more comfortable ride and makes your fuel go that bit further, so the right tyre pressure helps you save money as well as improving safety. It also reduces carbon dioxide emissions which protects the environment.
It is estimated that 37% of cars run on tyres which are dangerously under-inflated? The correct inflation for these vehicles would save £440 million per year
